FREE AGENTS Questions
Yes! That's what our Free Agent process is for. Register by yourself or with a few friends and we'll place you on a team.
Once you sign up as a Free Agent for a league, the league will work to place you on a team. For most players, you will get placed on a team with other people who registered individually but in some cases you may get placed on an established team who finds themselves short of players. We will aim to send you an email with your team placement roughly a week or two prior to your indicated start date, but sometimes it could take a little longer to fill a full roster.
We will do everything we can to place everyone who registers. For most seasons in most leagues, everyone will get placed. Occasionally we will wind up in a situation where we won't be able to fill our final Free Agent team, in which case we will communicate with the player to offer spots in another Gotham City league, a credit toward a future season, or a refund.
We typically try to limit Free Agent groups to no more than 4 in order to preserve team dynamics and so that no one feels on the outside of a group. If you have more than that, we encourage you to try to put together a full team. That said, in certain situations we're able to offer exceptions. Please email info@gothamcitysoftball.nyc.
Team Questions
In most cases, Free Agents will be assigned to house teams with other Free Agents. In limited situations, we may have available Free Agents to add to your roster. Please email info@gothamcitysoftball.nyc to inquire about availability. However, please note that Free Agents added to your team will not count toward the registration fee for the team.
The league will provide t-shirts in your desired color with the Gotham City logo and there are no umpire fees for teams! Teams may elect to customize their jerseys for additional fees or provide their own jerseys. In either case, please communicate with the league by emailing info@gothamcitysoftball.nyc.
Each team must provide at least one bat for their team. Teams are also responsible for providing five new F12 clincher game balls for their home games. Additionally, we strongly recommend protective face masks for catchers and pitchers.
Generally, no. Once the full season schedule has been set, we do our best not to deviate from it unless we are forced to do so in order to reschedule rainouts. This is out of fairness to the other teams and because removing games from a day's schedule create logistical and scheduling challenges for our field crews and umpires as well as wasting valuable field permits. We encourage teams to make good use of the off week and timeslot preference fields when they sign up to minimize such situations.
GAME DAY Questions
Gotham City Softball's policy is that we will play through light rain, but will pause or suspend play in the event of heavy rains, thunder/lightning, or unsafe field conditions. Once games have started, our umpires are responsible for making decisions about playability.
If the forecast/radar is particularly ominous, we may postpone games in advance, but we will likely not do this more than 2-3 hours ahead of time.
If games are postponed either prior to or during games, we will communicate via SportNinja to all affected leagues/teams.
Please do not email/message us about rain in the days prior to the event. We actively monitor the forecast on an hourly basis leading up to scheduled games and will communicate any changes as soon as decisions have been made. All games are on, until any communication has been made to the contrary.
Because of the way that the NYC Parks Department permits ballfields, we do not have access to the fields until the scheduled game time, which means that sometimes we may need to take the field and start abruptly. If another league is refusing to get off the field in time, look for a Gotham City umpire or field coordinator in a forest green polo to handle the situation.
If you think you're in the wrong spot or that there's been a communication mistake, please feel free to email info@gothamcitysoftball.nyc or message @gothamcitysoftball on Instagram. We'll respond promptly.
Please review our league rules for minimum rostered players and picking up players from other teams as subs. In most cases, teams will be able to play legal games even if they are short on players.
If teams will be unable to field a team, they should communicate this to league staff via email as soon as possible.
If you need subs, you can email info@gothamcitysoftball.nyc prior to game day (the more notice the better please) and we may be able to help connect you with subs from other teams.
Please direct all rule interpretation or enforcement questions to the commissioner: brent@gothamcitysoftball.nyc. Depending on the matter at hand, he may include the Gotham City Advisory Board to assist.
Gotham City umpires are responsible for interpretation of the rules on the field, and their decision is final. No form of in-game protest or appeals are available.
Generally speaking, the league will not retroactively change the result of games as the result of email appeals, but we are receptive to feedback and constructive criticism about the rules or their enforcement.
If, in your view an umpire is not properly implementing a particular rule or it is not being consistently enforced across the league, we want to know to improve the playing experience for everyone.
In some circumstances we may determine that additional changes/clarifications/additions to the official league rules may be necessary.
Please see our Incident Report page for more information.
